Watch Out: Copier Leasing Contracts Under Fire for Unfair Terms

Businesses looking to lease office equipment need to be extra cautious after recent findings from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC). Fujifilm Australia has been flagged for including unfair contract terms in its leasing agreements—raising concerns about how some providers operate in the industry.

What Was the Issue?

The ACCC found that Fujifilm’s contracts locked businesses into long-term agreements with terms that were heavily skewed in favor of the provider. These contracts made it difficult for businesses to terminate agreements, imposed unfair penalties, and provided little flexibility for customers.

In addition, Fujifilm has been known to put customers on copy plans, where businesses are locked into paying for a set number of prints—even if they don’t use them. This practice forces companies to pay for prints they don’t actually make, driving up costs unfairly.

This case highlights a common issue in the photocopier leasing industry: complex contracts designed to benefit the provider rather than the customer. Many businesses unknowingly sign agreements that contain hidden fees, rigid terms, and little room for negotiation.

How to Protect Your Business

Before signing any lease agreement, watch out for these red flags:

  • Automatic renewals – Does the contract auto-renew without clear notice?

  • One-sided termination clauses – Can the provider cancel easily, but you can’t?

  • Hidden fees – Are there undisclosed charges for servicing, maintenance, or overuse?

  • Forced copy plans – Are you required to pay for prints even if you don’t use them?

  • Lack of flexibility – Can you upgrade or downgrade your equipment as needed?
